The Joys of a Dog Walking Job

For an animal lover with a good, natural rapport with dogs there are a variety of jobs which you could do involving their care.  Some people will study for many years to become a vet while others will get a kennel job at a boarding kennel.  However if you would like to work for yourself doing something that you enjoy then you couldn’t do much better than setting up your own dog walking business.  Dog walking jobs are fun, relatively stress free and allow you to choose when and for how long you work allowing you to fit other commitments in between walks.

You will need to start with a bit of research into how many people provide a dog walking service in your local area as, though there is generally room for several dog walkers in an area, you won’t have much luck if your town is inundated with walkers.  While looking into these companies check out how much they charge for walks of different lengths as you will want to be charging a comparable amount.

Make sure that you get yourself some good public liability insurance to cover you should one of the dogs in your care get hurt or hurt another animal.  Other than that your main expense will be advertising in the beginning, though once you have a good customer base they will start to recommend you to friends.

If you’d like to earn a bit more money on top then, by doing a course on basic dog grooming, you could offer to groom dogs when they’ve been given a walk which would save owners another task for which they may not have time.  If you are willing to look after dogs in your own home for short periods, say when one of your regular customers is away for a weekend then you will need to invest in some dog bowls, beds and a dog kennel.
