Although not all women experience menopause symptoms, over half of all women do report at least some minor symptoms associated with the hormonal imbalance that occurs as a result of menopause. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was in wide spread use until 2002 when the results of the Women’s Health Initiative study were released. This study revealed such significant health risks associated with HRT use that this study was actually stopped before it was fully completed. HRT was shown to increase the risk of blood clots, breast cancer and heart disease. Obviously after these results were released, women stopped using HRT in droves. HRT use literally came to a screeching halt. Menopause however didn’t come to a stop, women still suffered from symptoms that had limited treatment options.

Since virtually all treatments carry with them some type of risk, more women have begun trying to treat their symptoms with more natural methods such as diet and exercise. I always come down to diet and excise doesn’t it? Maintaining a healthy weight can help to minimize menopause symptoms and it can also help to reduce the risk of osteoporosis. A diet rich in calcium and vitamin D helps promote strong healthy bones. There are some studies that suggest eating soy based products may help reduce the severity of hot flashes, but there are also conflicting studies that state that soy may interfere with the body’s ability to naturally produce hormones, so the verdict isn’t yet in on soy.

Exercise works on many levels. Not only do weight bearing exercises promote bone health, but exercise also works to reduce stress, maintain a healthy weigh and help promote better sleep. All of these things work together to minimize menopause symptoms such as insomnia, mood swings, trouble concentrating and osteoporosis. Maintaining a healthy weight minimizes hot flashes and increases energy levels.

So, although there are no miracle solutions when it comes to dealing with menopause, certainly lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise can help considerably. Visit Signs of Menopause Guide for more articles and information about menopause.
