Did you just find out on a recent visit to the orthodontist that you may need to wear headgear? It seems that braces are just not enough to correct some oral health problems and the orthodontist believes it is best to also use headgear to help. In this article we will talk about a few things that are good to know if you are getting headgear or maybe thinking about getting headgear to help correct your teeth and bite.
Orthodontic headgear is comprised of a set of elastic bands that go around the back of the head or on top of the head and are connected to the braces with hooks from a wire called the facebow. This device applies pressure to the jaw by pulling it back. This pressure will either stop the growth of the protruding jaw or at least slow it down so that the opposite jaw may grow out.
The length of treatment for wearing the headgear can vary based on the patient’s needs. The time frame can be anywhere from as little as 6 months to 18 months. A patient is expected to wear the headgear for 10-14 hours per day, also based on the patient’s needs. The headgear only works when the patient is wearing the device so it is strongly recommended to follow the orthodontist’s instructions closely otherwise treatment time may be extended.
Soreness and tenderness is expected, especially the first couple of days from wearing the headgear. Typically over the counter pain killers will be sufficient to handle the pain but if it worsens then the patient will need to see the orthodontist immediately. The teeth may be sore when chewing and tender to touch about 12 hours after wearing the headgear. Younger patients may experience this pain in as little as 2 hours after wearing the device.
These are just a few things you can expect when it comes to getting orthodontic headgear. Coupled with braces a patient will have a proper bite and a great smile that they can enjoy for the rest of their life.
