Even with the great improvement in technology, the risks of plastic surgery are still present. Patients should still face the reality of the procedure will not going as planned. Before deciding to undergo plastic surgery, it is best to find out the risks. Here are some of the common problems that can occur in plastic surgery.
* Infection- though the risk of having an infection is reduced by taking antibiotics, if it occurs, it is very serious. The risks are greater for smokers, those who take steroids and have vascular conditions.
* Low blood pressure- It can be normal during operation, but a sudden drop of blood pressure can occur and it can be fatal.
* Bleeding- this might result in complications like hematomas and seromas
* Scars- this depends on the capacity of the skin to heal, but there are some surgeons who are experts in hiding scars
* Lose stitches- this may cause internal bleeding or hernia if the sutures come loose and it would require additional surgical operation
* Nerve damage- this causes numbness but can be treated with reconstructive surgery
* Reactions to anesthesia- depends on the health condition of the patient and seriousness of the surgery
* Necrosis- it is the death of tissue because of insufficient supply of oxygen on the operated area
* Asymmetry- it requires a second surgery regardless of its extent.
Even with the highest expertise of care, the risks of plastic surgery cannot be eliminated. Like any surgical procedures, the risk from plastic surgery is also associated with the procedure and technique used and triggered by the patient’s condition. It is always advisable to think over the risks before entering the operating room. Choose a surgeon that cannot only perform the operation, but is also willing to help the patient in understanding the risks of plastic surgery.
